    A Deplorable Accident
Miss Pratt of Plano Instantly Killed and Miss Lucas Seriously Injured

The most Deplorable accident that has happen in this section for some time occurred Monday night in the neighborhood of the A. M. Carter's ranch about five miles west of Rexburg on the old road leading to Market Lake and just this side of the North Fork bridge.
As near as we can learn, Bishop Lucas of Edmunds, was in Rexburg during the day doing some trading and getting supplies, being quite heavily loaded, on his departure for home late in the afternoon of the day mentioned. He had with him his daughter, a young lady of about 17 years of age and a companion of hers, Miss Delilah Pratt of the same age, all three occupied the spring seat.
All went well until they arrived at the scene where the accident happen. There they came to a ditch crossing that had been covered by a culvert when they crossed it in the morning, but being somewhat broken, it had been removed during the day and the ditched fixed preparatory to putting in a new one, but on some account was not put in place, and naturally made it very dangerous for a team to cross especially in the dark. Nearing the ditch, the horses shied at the culvert that was left on the side of the road, and his daughter rising to see ahead, informed her father as to the ditch in front of them, when the frenzied horses gave a jump, and down went the front end of the wagon with such force as to throw all three a considerable distance ahead. The ladies it is said were thrown about 30 feet. Miss Pratt being of large stature, fell heavily, striking on one side of her head, the fall breaking her neck and causing instant death. Miss Lucas received a broken leg, sprained hands and a severe fracture of the skull. She is in very critical condition. Mr. Lucas was least hurt, escaping with some slight bruises. Mr. Lucas held to the lines and was dragged for some distance, but the cries for help from his daughter caused him to drop the lines and let the team continue in its flight.
Mr. Lucas at once went to the ranch house for aid. A messenger was sent to Rexburg for Dr. Hyde, who repaired to the scene of the accident, happening about 9 o'clock. In the meantime the injured were taken to Carter's ranch house and tenderly cared for until the Dr.'s arrival, who dressed the wounds of Miss Lucas and made her feel as comfortable as possible under the circumstances. The Dr. thinks Miss Lucas may pull through if nothing of an unfavorable nature occurs.
The body of Miss Pratt was taken to her home in Plano yesterday morning, while Miss Lucas has to be taken care of at Carter's ranch as she cannot be moved for the present.
The occurrence has cast a deep shadow of gloom over this entire community and is a hard blow to the parents of the young ladies, and we now extend our heart felt sympathy with their many friends and acquaintances in this city in the occurrance of this sad affair.

THE TETON Peak NEWSPAPER Thursday June 20, 1901
County Attorney Millsap left on yesterday's train for Independence to examine into and ascertain the facts in regards to the accident which occurred last week near A. M. Carters ranch and resulted in Miss Pratt losing her life. Mr. Millsap will endeavor to find out who is responsible for the removal of the culvert from the public highway without setting any signal to indicate that it had been removed. This is a very serious affair and there is no question but what our amiable county attorney while there will give the matter a very thorough investigation and demand the proper parties to appear and answer, in all probability to the charge of murder.

    NO CRIMINAL NEGLIGENCE
County Attorney Millsap returned from Independence last Friday where he went to examine into the facts as to who was to blame for the death of Miss Pratt, caused by the removal of a culvert near A. M . Carter's ranch about two weeks ago. Coroner Samuel Jones summoned a jury and after hearing the evidence and facts decided that there was no criminal negligence on the part of anyone. There is something very peculiar about this investigation; on Monday afternoon June 10, James Carter removed the culvert from the ditch across the public highway opposite A. M. Carter's Ranch and left the ditch open without putting out any signal light, until the next morning. Just about dusk Bishop Lucas of Edmunds accompanied by his daughter and Miss Delia Pratt, was returning from Rexburg, drove into the ditch, were thrown from the buggy and Miss Pratt was instantly killed. Miss Lucas is still in critical condition. In the face of this the coroner's jury says there is no criminal negligence on the part of any one. Of course when James Carter removed the culvert he "didn't think" that any accident would occure therefrom. It appears something should be done in this matter which would be an example to others who "don't think".

    Notater:

Sophia Caroline Keller was born January 18,1861 in Box Elder County, Utah to Ane Kirstine Larsen (Anglicized Anna Christina Larsen) and Jens Mogensen Kjøller (Anglicized James Morgan Keller).

Sophia’s mother and father were both converts to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and immigrants from Denmark. Anna married James, who practiced polygamy, as the third of his eventual five plural wives. Sophia spent her youth in Brigham City and Mantua, Utah as a part of very large family with 13 younger brothers and sisters and 27 half-brothers and half-sisters from her father’s other wives, a number of whom died in infancy.

After finishing her schooling in Brigham City, Sophia joined her family in Mink Creek, Idaho where she taught school and worked as a dairywoman. While there she met William Orson Pratt, a young man from Franklin Idaho and they were married October 5,1883 in the Endowment House in Salt Lake City. Sophia and William worked and farmed successively in Mink Creek, Wilford, and Plano, Idaho.

Over time, they became the parents of ten children, seven girls and three boys, the youngest of whom, Merlin, passed away at age 15 months. In 1901, tragedy struck when their oldest daughter, Alice Delilah, was killed in a carriage accident shortly before her graduation.

In 1902, William was asked to go on a mission for the church to West Virginia, leaving Sophia the sole provider for the family for two years. This she accomplished by selling garden produce, chickens and eggs. She also was a good seamstress and pastry cook. These were trying times, with illness and hardships, but the children were able to attend the Academy at Rexburg.

After William’s return from his mission, the family moved to Albion, Idaho where they purchased a large ranch and raised hay and cattle. William was elected Cassia County Sheriff and held the post for sixteen years. When the County Seat office was moved to Burley in 1913, Mr. Sophia and William sold their holdings at Albion and built a new home in Burley on Overland Avenue. The younger members of the family attended the Idaho State Normal Academy.

Sophia was quiet by nature and ever thoughtful of the welfare of others, especially those who were less fortunate than she. With the early death of two of her daughters and other difficult circumstances, Sophia spent much time caring for many of her grandchildren.

After finishing his forth term as sheriff, William began investing in a series of businesses, many of which investments proved unwise and left the family without savings. On March 2, 1923, William was killed in a mining accident in Nevada, where he’d gone to work.

After William’s death, Sophia lived with her daughter Vada, Her later years were spent quietly, caring for her family and raising flowers and vegetables which she always shared with others.

Sophia passed away December 3, 1944 in Redlands, California and was buried in the Pleasant View Cemetery at Burley, Idaho.

    Notater:

Annetta Hayter was born on 18 September 1822 in Portsmouth, England to Henry and Kezia Hayter, the youngest of seven children. Ann spent her childhood in an industrious, middle class farming community where her parents had lived their whole lives.
On 24 October 1841, Ann married Henry Fleet, a schoolteacher five years her senior. In 1842, Ann and Henry moved across the channel to Normandy, France where Henry took up a teaching position. Three daughters were born to Ann and Henry while living in France: Mary Ann in 1842, Alice in 1844, and Louisa in 1846. Sometime around Louisa’s birth, Ann and Henry’s marriage, strained by Henry’s alcohol addiction, fell apart and they divorced.
Not long after her divorce, Ann met Thomas Sharratt Smart from Staffordshire, England, who was also living and working in France. They married on 1 March 1847 and Thomas legally adopted Ann’s three children.
In 1848, the Smart family decided to emigrate to America. They made the ocean crossing without incident and settled in St. Louis, Missouri, where two more daughters, Charlotte and Maria, were born to the family. While living in Missouri, Ann and Thomas came into contact with members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, leading to their conversion and baptism into the church in 1851.
In 1852, Ann and Thomas decided to move again, this time to Utah to join the main body of their new faith. They joined the Allen Weeks Company, departing from Kanesville, Iowa (present day Council Bluffs, Iowa) on 13 July 1852. Two children were born to the family here, Thomas and Sarah. Around 1856 or 1857, the Smart family moved to Provo, where two more children were born, Eliza and Frances. Frances lived just three months and passed away. Finally, in 1860 or 1861, Thomas and Ann were asked by church leaders to join a group going to settle the Cache Valley in southern Idaho. They moved their family to what would become Franklin, Idaho, where Ann’s last two children, William and Mary, were born.
In 1869, Thomas, with Ann’s consent, began practicing polygamy and married a second wife, Marguerite Justet.
As the matriarch of a large family in a frontier settlement, Ann worked hard raising and providing for her family. She was an active participant in the Relief Society, the women’s organization of the church, and in the social activities of her community.
Ann was killed by a lighting strike in her farm home in Franklin, Idaho on 22 June 1876 at the age of 54. She was buried in the family cemetery on her farm.
