NOTE: The early part of his life he was called 'Travis' but in 1960 he started going by 'T. Glenn'.

TOGETHERNESS (He loved this poem that he received from his sister when his wife passed away. He read it every night before he went to bed. His sister had received it from a friend at the time her husband passed,)

    TOGETHERNESS
    Death is nothing at all.
I have only slipped away into the next room.
Whatever we were to each other we still are.
Call me by my old familiar name.
Speak to me in the same easy way you always have.
Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes we enjoyed together.
Play, smile, think of me, pray for me.
Life means all that it ever meant.
It is the same as it always was.
    There is absolute unbroken continuity.
Why should I be out of your mind because
I am out of your sight?
I am but waiting for you for an interval,
somewhere very near, just around the corner.
All is well, nothing is past. Nothing has been lost.
One brief moment and all will be as it was before--only better......
    Infinitely happier.
We will be one, together forever.

    Obituary: Travis Glenn Haws
    May 8, 1930 - March 25, 2014
Dr. Travis Glenn Haws passed peacefully on March 25th in St. George, Utah to be united once again with his beloved wife JoAnn and departed family members. In his final testimony he wrote, "I want you to know that God lives, and that I love you all, not only for who you are, but what I know you have the power to become."

Travis was born in Blackfoot, Idaho in 1930 to Glenn Alley Haws and Roxie Estella Jensen Duckworth and grew up in Idaho Falls. He served an LDS mission in Brazil in 1950 and later married JoAnn Kay Chadwick in the Idaho Falls temple in 1953. He graduated with his BA and MA from BYU and his Ph.D. in Zoology from Purdue University. From 1958-66 he held university teaching positions at colleges in New York, New Jersey, and was the first LDS professor hired by the University of Puget Sound in Washington State. He joined the Church Education System in 1966 and became the LDS Institute Director at Portland State University from 1970-92. Among his various church callings, he was Branch President in Plattsburgh [New York] and Bishop of the Tacoma [Washington] 4th and Forest Grove [Oregon] wards. Since his retirement, he served additional LDS missions with his wife in Philadelphia, Nauvoo and Salt Lake City.
Dr. Haws was an avid outdoorsman, master gardener, entrepreneur, scientist, teacher, scholar, author and family man. He is known for his wit and candor, his outgoing nature, and engaging personality. He was curious about life and always amazed by its profound beauty. He had a special gift for appreciating classical music from the moment he heard his first Metropolitan Opera at the age of nine and finding himself moved to tears without knowing why. He later fulfilled a lifelong dream as the guest conductor for the Utah Symphony at the 2006 Deer Valley 4th of July concert. Just months before his passing, Dr. Haws was able to publish his Magnus Opus, a book entitled "Who and What Am I, Why Am I Here on This Earth" (www.answersfromheaven.org) a book he believed could help any person understand the truth about the origin and purpose of life.

He is survived by his sister Sharon Jewkes and his 8 children, 31 grandchildren, and 25 great-grandchildren and will be sorely missed by all those who were taught at his feet and influenced by his love and testimony of the Savior Jesus Christ.

His family is holding funeral services in his honor at 1:00 pm on Friday, April 4, 2014 at the Sandy LDS chapel, 9855 S 2300 E with viewing services beginning at 11:00 am.

    Notater:

In the beautiful little town of Frederikshaven, on the north shores of Denmark, a son was born to Jens Hansen Rove and Maren Kristen Larson, on the 3rd day of May, 1825. They named him Lars Rove Jensen.
At an early age, Lars Rove became a sailor, as most of the young men did in those days, in the countries that bordered the seas. He crossed the ocean nine times, and he was shipwrecked off the coast of Brazil, and also near Galveston, Texas. This must have been somewhat frightening to a young man still in his teens, yet they were exciting for him also.
In April of 1849, Lars Rove was a crew member on the ship "Hartley," that was sailing from Liverpool, England, to the United States of America. Now, this ship was carrying "Mormons" across the waters to their beloved Zion, and while on this special ocean trip Lars Rove Jensen heard his first Mormon sermon preached by Elder William Hulme, who was presiding over the saints on this voyage. Lars Rove was very interested in what lie heard and he had a feeling that this doctrine was true. So upon the ship's arrival in New Orleans he was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, on the 29th day of April 1849, just before he turned twenty-four years of age. A John Everett and George and Alfred Percy were baptized the same day but Lars Rove Jensen was the first Scandinavian to be baptized a member of the "Mormon" church.
Lars Rove Jensen, in company with John Everett, returned to Europe once more, but in the fall of that same year, 1849, he again returned to New Orleans, this being the ninth time for him to cross the ocean. Lars stopped in New Orleans that winter, and secured a job fishing for oysters. In the spring of 1850, he began the trip to Utah, but when he arrived at CounciI Bluffs, he again stopped and secured work on a ferry boat until spring of 1851, when he crossed the plains in the James Allred company, arriving in Salt Lake City in September of I851.
That fall he built a house for Leonard Smith and lived with him that winter. He was then ordained a Seventy and with the permission of Joseph Young, who was president of the Seventies, Lars Rove Jensen went to California, returning three years later. He had a purse filled with gold dust and he went directly to President Young's office and told the clerk to take out one-tenth of the gold dust for his tithing. It was at this time that Lars Rove was first introduced to Pres. Brigham Young. Lars then reported himself to President Joseph Young, who asked him, "Have you kept yourself straight?" Lars answered, "Yes. In the fall of 1855, the same year that he returned from California, Lars married Jane Duston, of Alpine, Utah.
In 1857, at the time that Johnston's Army was marching into Salt Lake City, a call came for a company of Cavalry from Lehi, Utah, area, and Lars Rove was one of the men chosen for this company, and on September 28, 18,57, under the direction of Captain Sidney Willes, this company was stationed in Echo Canyon. Their job was to block Echo Canyon against the entrance of the troops. They constructed fortifications in the mountains. Two months later, the company was released to return to their homes, on November 30, 1857. Lars Rove Jensen was a private in this Company.
In 1862, Brigham Young (at a request from President Abraham Lincoln, for a company of Utah Cavalry to serve for the United States) sent the Cavalry east to protect the mail and telegraph lines, from the North Platte River below Independence Rock to Fort Bridger, from the Indian attacks. Lars Rove Jensen, joined the Lot Smith Company in Salt Lake City on the 3rd of April, 1862. This group had traveled this same route during the attack of Johnston's Army and now [heir job was to protect the property of the Overland Telegraph and Mails Co." These men, including Lars Rove Jensen, furnished their own horses, saddles, bridles, and all their own equipment at their own expense, serving at their own expense, which was something otherwise "unknown in the history of the Civil War. These men rendered specific service during the Civil War. It was national service and it was credibly and patriotically rendered. These pioneer soldiers guarded the mail route and telegraph lines successfully.
Upon Lars' release, the family moved to Cache Valley and was one of the first settlers there.
Four children were born to Lars Rove and Jane Dunston Jensen.
    (1) Lars Dunston, was born 14 Feb 18,58 at Alpine, Utah. He married Laura Stanton. He died I Jan 1946, at San Diego, Calif.
    (2) Thomas Hansen, was born 23 April 1860, at Alpine, Utah. He married Julia Hills Johnson. They had six (6) children. He died 3 Dec 1938, at San Diego, California.
    (3) Christin Maria, born 29 Sept. 1861, at Richmond, Cache, Utah. She married David A. Johnson and had ten (10) children. She died 9 July 1933, at National City, California.
    (4) Jane Mariah, was born 2 Nov. 1863, at Richmond, Cache, Utah, and died 6 Dec. 1863.
Soon after the baby's death, Lars' wife Jane died, leaving him with three small children, so he returned to Alpine.
While in Alpine, Lars Rove met Elizabeth Ann Freestone (Langston), who was born 26 January 1842, in Huntersville, Harding, Ohio, the daughter of Thomas Freestone and Ann Fall Freestone. Elizabeth Ann, was ten years old when her parents came to Utah and she walked much of the way. In 1857, during the time of polygamy or the reformation, it was arranged by Elizabeth Ann's parents that she marry John Langston, who was twenty years older than Elizabeth Ann. She was just fifteen years and three months old at the time and on March 7 1857, Elizabeth Ann Freestone and John Langston were marred.
John Langston had another wife, Clearlinda Phillips Langston.
Elizabeth Ann and John Langston had two children, Elizabeth Ellen, born 4 April 1858 and George Heber, born 21 Sept. 1860.
Elizabeth Ellen married Lyman Johnson Swett, on 4 July 1877 and they had thirteen children. She died 11 December 1926 in Vernal Utah.
George Heber married Ann Mary Nielson on 1 January 1884. They had seven children, he died 23 April 1939 in Vernal, Utah.
Elizabeth Ann lived with John Langston about four years, she then divorced him and returned to Alpine, Utah, to live with her mother.
On the 27th of August 1864, Elizabeth Ann Freestone (Langston) and Lars Rove Jensen were married and they settled in Alpine, Utah. Now Elizabeth Ann had two children and Lars Rove had three children so they started out their new married life with five children. Lars Rove raised Elizabeth Ann's two children and Lars Rove's two boys were raised by Elizabeth Ann, and his daughter lived with them much of the time and with her grandmother part of the time. Lars Rove's two sons by Jane Dunston, Lars and Thomas, paid a beautiful tribute to Elizabeth Ann at the time of her death - saying that she was a noble and wonderful woman and that their own mother could not have been better to them nor have taught them better.
While Lars and Elizabeth lived in Alpine, they had six children born to them
    (1) Lewis Reuben, born 21 March 1865, married Kirston Marie Sorensen and they had eleven children, he died 12 January 1909,
    (2) Anna Louisa, born 116 April 1867, married Abinadi Porter and they had ten children, she died 20 March 1934.
    (3) William Richard, born 7 October 1868 and died 10 October 1869.
    (4) Joseph, born 19 February 1870 and died the same day.
    (5) James Franklin, born 31 March 1872 and married Laura Estella Whitmill. They had three children; Laura passed away at twenty-nine years of age and James Franklin married Eva Law -- they had one child. James Franklin was accidentally shot and killed on 1 September 1917.
    (6) Leonard Alonzo born 7 September 1874 and died 9 October 1875.
Elizabeth Ann and, Lars Rove worked hard on their little farm in Alpine and they were active in civic and social affairs -- Lars Rove played the violin very well (as did some of his sons) and' he played for dances - so he was known as '' Fiddler Jensen".
They sold produce that they raised on their farm to help pay the expenses for their large family. They moved to Springlake where (7) Rhoda Laura was born 27 September 1876. She married John McDonald Rider on 24 April 1894 in St. George, Utah, they had nine children. She died I November 1944. While they lived in Springlake, they had two children get married. Lars' daughter, Christina Marie, by his first wife, and Elizabeth Ann's daughter by John Langston, Elizabeth Ellen.
In the fall of 1878, Lars sold their farm in Springlake and rode away to find another farm. When he reached Salt Lake City, he met a friend, who told Lars about a widow and her five children, who needed someone to pay their fare from Scotland. Lars said he needed his money to buy another farm, but his friend said, "You don't need a farm, go to Orderville". So Lars spent the money to repay the fares from Scotland for Agnes Work Smith, who was born 28 Dec. 1840, and her five children. On 23 September 1878 while still in Salt Lake, Lars Rove married Agnes Work Smith in the endowment house, and took her and her five children to Springlake with him. That same year he moved both his wives and families to Orderville, Utah, where they lived the United Order for five years.
Here the houses were small and built side by side, forming four walls like a fort, with a large hall in the center.
This was a very different life for Lars and his families. The wives would spin and knit. Two of the boys, Reuben and Frank worked in the Carpenter shop, while Annie worked in the kitchen and in the factory. Everyone had a job. Lars Rove herded sheep and while he was with the herd, he had a dream... he was walking up main street in Salt Lake City when he came to an alley: upon walking in this alley, he saw on the right-hand side Brigham Young, who had a veil over him. Brigham Young stretched out his hand, shaking hands and smiling, he said, "You have gotten through alright."

Lars blev gift med Elizabeth Ann Freestone den 27 aug. 1864 i Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah, USA. Notater:

Elizabeth Ann Freestone was born 26 January 1842 at Hunterville, Harden County, Ohio. She was the eldest daughter and third child of Thomas Freestone and Ann Fall Freestone.
When she was fifteen years of age she was married in a civil ceremony in polygamy to John Langston, fifteen year her senior. His first marriage was to Clarinda Phillips also in a civil ceremony, 5 September, 1844. Clarinda and Elizabeth were both sealed to John Langston the same day in the Endowment House in Salt Lake City on 7 March 1857.
By John Langston, Elizabeth had two children, Elizabeth Ellen and George Heber. The 1860 census of Alpine show Elizabeth and her daughter living with her brothers George, 22 and James, 19. No mention is made of George Heber who was two weeks old when the census was taken. Mention is also made of sisters Johanna, age 10, and Emma, age 8.
The conclusion to this point of residence is simple: Elizabeth had already left John Langston. They were later legally divorced. For history of early life and struggles of the Freestone, see her dads history.
Four events changed Elizabeth's life: the marriage of her two brother, George, 25 December 1861 and James 15 February 1868; the death of her father Thomas near Parowan by the indians, 1858, and the marriage of her mother, Ann Fall Freestone, to Andrew Hudnut following Thomas Freestone's death. The family was in dire financial circumstances . Andrew Hudnut was a well to do bachelor with a goodly supply of food on hand, a farm and livestock. After this marriage, the Hudnuts sold the farm and moved to Orderville, Utah, purchased a farm in that area and joined the united Order.
Elizabeth had married Lars Rove Jensen, 27 August 1864, in Alpine. They moved to Orderville, Utah in 1878. They joined the United Order.
Lars Jensen's first wife, Jane Dawson dies previous to the marriage of Elizabeth and Mr. Jensen. She left four children. Elizabeth reared the two younger ones, Lars and Thomas. Through their lives they spoke most highly of Elizabeth. They said their own mother could not have done more for them. She was truly a second mother.
One time when Mr. Jensen returned to Orderville from Salt Lake City where he had gone to sell a load of produce he raised, he was accompanied by a third wife and four children. Her husband had died some time before.
When Lars Jensen and his third wife decided to move to Provo Bench, Elizabeth did not want to go. Her weary body preferred to remain in Orderville. Her two sons sons, Reuben and Frank were doing well in the carpentry trade and were able and willing to take care of their mother. Reuben built her a comfortable three-room house with a porch.
Elizabeth and Lars Jensen had nine children. ; Two died in infancy. With her daughter and son by Mr. Langston, she was the mother of eleven children. She also reared the two of Jane Dawson.
Elizabeth was of medium size, dark hair and eyes- - typical Freestone eyes. She was of a gentle quiet disposition. She was very religious as was her mother. It is said that every evening Elizabeth read the Bible or Book of Mormon to her children. She did a great deal of sewing and made all the clothes for her children.
Although she very likely had a minimum of schooling due to the many moves of her family and her early marriage, her life reveals what her real feelings were towards learning. She wrote several books of prose, poems and songs. At night her exhausted body and mind demanded sleep and rest. When and if she could not sleep, she would get up and allow her active mind and emotions to have their turn of expression.
Because of the rugged life that Elizabeth endured, her health began to fail. When she was 56 years old she died at Orderville and there she is buried. What a full fruitful life and what a legacy she has left her family ,far and near, to her church, and to mankind. "The Freestone Family."

Henry Roland Whitmill [born February 4, 1854, in Banbury, Oxfordshire, England] and Luna Estella Searle [born October 23, 1860, at Payson, Payson, Utah]. They lived across the lane from us in a house surrounded by a cluster of tall trees. They built their house and it was the second one built by a white man between Blackfoot and Idaho Falls. [See photo] Their son, Barney, was the first white child born between those two towns."

(Added by Sharon Haws Jewkes, daughter of Roxie.)
Henry's father was Henry Roland Whitmill b. 11 Feb 1818, d. 11 Mar 1863; and mother was Ann Budd b. 23 Sep 1822. D. 14 Jul 1894. They were married 18 Nov 1842. Henry (Jr.) migrated to the United States in 1863 according to the 1910 census.

Henry was baptized 16 Dec 1863 in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He married Luna Estella Searle (also found in some histories as Estella Aluna) on 26 Sep 1877 and was sealed in the Endowment House on 14 Feb 1878. He was 6½ years older than Luna. Luna died on 23 Feb 1917.

Henry then married Isabella Mabel Percival Leavell on 26 Mar 1918 in Pocatello, Idaho.** (See photo) Isabella was born 13 Feb 1881 in Colorado. She was 27 years younger than Henry. They are shown on the 1920 census living in Shelley, Idaho. Her daughter, Viglett Lavell [Violette Leavell], age 20, was living with them. None of Henry and Luna's children were listed. Isabella was previously married to Charles R Leavell and had three children, Violette, George L, and Charles B.

According to the 1930 census of Antelope, Los Angeles, California, there were two children with Isabella, Lowell P. born in 2 Jan 1920 and Delm??r (On the 1930 census you couldn't read his first name.) It is Delmear Roscoe Whitmill born 21 Jul 1922 in Shelley, Id. and died 28 Apr 2006 in Las Vegas, Nev. Found this on the Soc. Sec. Index. His middle name was found on WWII records. It stated Isabella as a widow, but Henry did not die until 5 Sep 1932 in Los Angeles, California. He was living with his daughter, Elsie Jerusha (Teeples) and her family. He was listed as being the age of 86, but it should have been 76. The California Death Index lists Isabella's death 17 Dec 1966 in Los Angeles.

[Additional history received from Jeanette Moulton June 2011]
Henry R. Whitmill came from England to America in 1854 and settled at Cedar Point in Idaho in 1884. Henry lived north of the Frank Grange place where Alan Lyon now lives. Their home was the first one built on the highway between Idaho Falls and Blackfoot.

Henry married Estella Aluna Searle [correction: Luna Estella Searle] in 1877 in Utah. They were among the first settlers of the Firth and Basalt area. Henry's mother, Ann Budd Whitmill, and her second husband, George King, also came to the valley with them.

[A son,] Barneybus Whitmill was born August 28, 1885, in a log cabin with a dirt roof, at Basalt. He has the distinction of being the first white baby boy born between Idaho Falls and Blackfoot. The dress he was blessed in was made from flowered curtain cloth.

In the summer of 1884 Henry R. Whitmill and George King began working three miles downstream from Eagle Rock, to obtain water from the Snake River to irrigate the land they had homesteaded. In December 1885 they were joined by four Dye brothers, James, William, Richard and Joseph. Lorenzo Firth, Charles and Eb Peterson, Fred Wilson and Heber Huband also joined in the construction of the Cedar Point canal. It took quite a few years to grub the sage brush and get the ground ready for irrigation.

When Henry wasn't working on the ground he would work on the railroad and worked quite often at Challis in the mines.

Henry had to plow by a hand plow and make his own potato planter and wooden harrow. As warm weather came the children had to go barefoot to save on shoes. When the Indians came to beg it would frighten the children and they would hide under the beds.

Estella Aluna made Minidoka pudding from flour and water with a milk and nutmeg sauce. The only candy they had was a little hard tack.

The children used to go to their Grandmother King's home to make long paper matches. The children use to have to herd cows all day. They helped carry water from the Snake River. They used large wooden barrels and would drag them home on wooden platforms.

They used to go down to the river in the winter and cut large blocks of ice, take it home and store it is saw dust for summer use.

Henry was constable at Basalt in November 1894. Henry and Aluna's children were Henry A., Laura, Elsie, George, Barneybus, John, Lee, Alice, Ora May, Seymour, Flossie and Harry.

Barney remembers Basalt being located where the present Blackfoot canal bridge on the highway is today. The first school he went to was located just north of the Government Canal on the highway and was later moved to a frame house just north of the Basalt Cemetery. They church house was north of the present Blackfoot Canal.

Estella Aluna [Luna Estella] died in 1917. Henry later remarried Isabell Mable [Mabel] Percival. In time they moved to Los Angeles, California. Henry died in Los Angeles Sep. 1932 and was buried at Basalt, Idaho in Sep. of 1932. (end)
