    Notater:

HANSINE REBECCA JORGENSEN was born March 6, 1865 in Brigham City to Hans Jorgensen and Dorthea Anderson Christensen. Rebecca was their 6th child. Her siblings were Jacob, Isaac, Abraham, Anna, Mary, (then Rebecca), Joseph and Moses . The family moved to Logan, being some of the earliest settlers in Cache Valley. They also homesteaded a ranch across the Bear River in Benson. Rebecca describes her Parents as loving, hard working and Happy. Her Mother was 30 years younger than her Father. The children learned to herd cows, garden, cook, shear sheep, and wash the wool, card and spin it. Rebecca could spin seven skeins when she worked all day. Their home seemed to be a place where the children of the neighborhood collected to play games, hear bible stories told by her Mother and singing Danish songs by her Father. In 1880 Rebecca went to Ephraim to help with her cousin’s invalid mother and she attended school there. During the winter of 1884-85 Rebecca and her sister Mary cooked for their brother’s railroad gang in Silverbow canyon. Rebecca took a job in February 1885 as a cook in the Logan temple. She and another young woman cooked dinner for 25 to 30 people. Rebecca lived at the Temple nearly three years. While polygamists were being hunted by the law, some brethren also stayed there and were provided meals. By attending devotionals each morning, Rebecca grew spiritually.

In the fall of 1887 Rebecca attended the Brigham Young College at Logan. She was asked to teach at a small school in Benson. She taught 20 pupils in 8 different grades. The next season she decided to return to school and become a real teacher. It was there that she met Peter Frost, a man 8 years her senior. He was a widower with a tiny daughter. They dated and were married July 6, 1893 in the Logan Temple. A few days later they picked up 20 month old Josephine from Sister Hanson, the lady who had been caring for her. Josephine did not walk until after Rebecca got her. Following their marriage Peter and Rebecca and Josephine lived with her Mother until fall when they moved into a little house. Peter worked and attended school.
AURELIA was born July 4, 1894. The next year Peter and Rebecca purchased an 86 acre farm in Benson. They also bought a claim for 40 acres near Rebecca’s ranch home. The claim required them to homestead it for two years to own it. They moved into a shanty there. Rebecca, Josephine and Aurelia were alone much of the time as Peter went from one place to the other, farming.
MYRTLE Almira Frost arrived February 19, 1896. Later that year Rebecca and the three little girls returned to the good two roomed log house on the farm. Peter and Rebecca worked hard and economized. After three years they were out of debt. They added another room to the house and finished two rooms upstairs.
LEOTA was born January 15, 1898. They now had four girls and a boy Niels Nielson who they had taken in to raise.
In the spring of 1899 Peter received a mission call to Denmark. Rebecca’s “Mission” was as hard as Peters: They had ten cows and the farm was planted in alfalfa. Rebecca and Niels (about 17) managed pretty well with the help of Rebecca’s brother’s during hay time. Rebecca became Primary President. She served until they moved to Salt Lake.

In June 1901 Peter returned home from his mission. Many visitors who had emigrated from Denmark came to see Peter and meet his family. Rebecca’s Mother died October 1902. This was a great loss to Rebecca.
Four more children arrived: Joseph CLARENCE was born June 2, 1902. Clarence was Peters 8th child and his first boy. He was so excited he phoned the neighbors early in the morning to share his happy news. Two years later on April 14, 1904 GENEVA was born.

DORTHEA was born on February 11, 1906, and January 1, 1908 another son, IVAN was born. March 12, 1908, 16 year old Josephine died. She had suffered with heart problems for some time. Josephine had served as the ward organist for several years. One year later Peter and Rebecca moved their family to Salt Lake City. Peter bought an interest in a feed store, and a seven room yellow brick house at 61 west, 400 north. Here their last baby VESTA Josephine was born March 17, 1910. Rebecca served as Relief Society Secretary for 4 years.
In 1914 Peter bought a scavenger business. A year later he traded it for a farm in Ioka, Utah. He rented out the farm and bought a 128 acre farm in Oakley, Utah with a large house, barns and other buildings. They moved there in 1915 and stayed five years. Peter also became a “Raleigh Man” and sold goods door to door.

In 1920 they purchased a farm and home in Bluffdale, Utah. It was there that three of their children found their companions. In 1929 Peter and Rebecca decided that running the farm was too much for them. They sold the farm to Leota and her husband Myrle Lewis.

Rebecca and Peter bought a small home in Riverton at 12315 South 1700 West. They spent three of the happiest, easiest years of their married life there. Because of financial problems caused by the depression, they sold their Riverton home in March 1933 and moved back to the Bluffdale farm with Leota and Myrle and lived in the north side of the house.
Peter and Rebecca went on a six month mission to Grand Forks, North Dakota. They returned home in April 1935. Not long after, Rebecca became ill. She died May 2, 1935. Seven years later Peter died February 1, 1942. They are both buried in the Bluffdale cemetery.

HE HAD TWO WIVES, MAREN AND DORTHEA. "Heart Throbs of the West," Volume 12, “Pioneer Furniture Their Pioneer Homes” reports that “Hans Jorgensen--Accompanied by his wife, Maren Kristina, left Denmark, December 10, 1852, to join their lot with the Saints in Utah. His wife died in New Orleans and he then made preparations to join the company, who under the leadership of John Forsgren, were going to the Valley of the Great Salt Lake. While on this journey he met and married Dorthea Christensen, July 4, 1853, at Council Bluffs. They resumed their journey reaching Salt Lake City, October 1, 1853. Here they built a dugout where they lived in Salt Lake for two and a half years, then moved to Brigham City where they lived nine years. On April 18, 1865, the Jorgensen family moved to Logan.”

Hans blev gift med Dorthea Christensdatter den 4 jul. 1853 i Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie, Iowa, USA. Notater:

Dorthea Christensen (Andersen) was born in Lille Ransing, Odense, Denmark. Her Father was Christen Andersen 'Norby' born in Oddense, Viborg, Denmark on 25 April 1796. He was a carpenter. He married Anne Pedersdatter or Petersen on 2 April 1822. Her married name was Anne Marie Andersen. She was born 29 April 1792.

After the death of Christen Andersen 'Norby' on 15 May 1841, Anne joined the Church (in 1852) and came to Utah with 3 of her daughters. Christian and Anne had six children, Mariane who married Christian Andersen Thorum and died in Ephraim on 1 January 1897; Dorthe Marie who died in Denmark; Johanna who married Frederick Holst and died in 1888 in Ephraim after being an invalid; Anne's other children were Maren who died in 1830 as a child; and Esper who stayed in Denmark and died in 1888; as well as Dorthea Christensen (Andersen) who married Hans Jorgensen on 4 July 1853 in Council Bluffs, Iowa, had eight children and died in Logan, Utah 3 October 1902.

Her Christening name was Dorthea Christensdatter. See more notes below.

She is listed as Dorthea in her daughter's papers and on her tombstone. (Note from RaeAnn Collier)
Dorthea is the person for whom the rest of the information is correct.

Dorthe Marie is her sister who was born four years earlier and did not come to America. She had a child out of wedlock just a few months after her mother, Anna Pedersdatter and her sisters, Marianne, Johanna, and Dorthea, left to join the Mormons in Utah. 3 months later, she marries the father of her children. We know this because the patronymic last name of the first child is listed as the same as the rest of the children. The priest knew who the father was and knew they intended to marry. Which they did as early in the spring as they could travel safely. Many times children were christened by their fathers at home because the winter cold prevented the parents from traveling into the parish safely. There were no cars or paved roads or salting equipment. The Danish would store up food for the winter and live their lives in closed quarters for many months. Taking care of marriage and recording Christenings after the winter is over shows up in many church books in the Viborg District. Missionaries who have served there even in the 21st Century, know of the harshness of winter there and know that visits to the deep country are usually done in the summer.

Some of Dorthea's family listed her as Dorthea Andersen and some as Dorthea Christensen. The Church Books, as well as the Census, in Denmark are required by law to keep the woman's maiden patronymic name, which from Dorthea's birth was Dorthea Christensdatter. That is how she is listed in the Census and the Church Books

When the family moved to Utah, one will notice there was a large group of German saints on the ship Dorthea came on with her mother. At this point, on the ship, there begins to be a shift to surnames created along the lines of the German rules for surnames. This is where she begins to show up in various records as Dorthea Christensen and then Dorthea Andersen, Andersen being the patronymic name which states that her father was the son of Anders, And Christensen being the patronymic name given to the boys to show they are the sons of Christen. This is also the time when her mother's name begins to be listed by her husband's last name instead of her patronymic name of Pedersdatter.

Please note here also that Marianne and her daughter came on another ship earlier than Anna, Dorthea and Johanne. Her daughter, Ane Katrine Christendatter, died as a two year old on that voyage. There is no record of her immunization in Denmark before they depart. Marianne's husband, Christen Andersen 'Thorum' appears in Danish Church records with the family, as they move toward Copenhagen where they can get various ships. The records indicate that he remained there alone until all the family could be put on a ship with passage to Utah. Then he inexplicably shows up in Utah Records where children are born at a later date. There is no record of his ship passage. The only way that I can currently guess about how he came is that he worked on the crew of a ship to get his passage and then came on his own across the country. His name does not show up on any current ship immigration records.

Jorgen Niels Christensen was born September 7, 1755 in Hasmark, Odense, Denmark on the island of Fyn and was christened November 23, 1755. His parents were Christen Niels Jacobsen and Kirsten Jorgensen both of whom were born near Odense on the island of Fyn, Denmark.
Jorgen married Elsie Marie Jensen October 18, 1779 Bederslev, Odense, Denmark. During the late 1700's when Jorgen was living, Denmark was prospering because of its neutral status politically.
He was raised on the Island of Fyn, the third largest island in Denmark which has 444 named islands with only 76 inhabited. The main city on the island of Fyn is Odense which is the birthplace of the author, Hans Christian Andersen.
There are over 120 castles on the island of Fyn; some of them date back to the 14th century; many of them are open for public tours. The people who built them felt they needed to have their homes be fortifications.
The many islands of Denmark and the peninsula are together known as the Danish Archipelago. Denmark long controlled the approach to the Baltic Sea; the only access was through the water around Denmark known as the Danish straits. This caused the ships to have to travel many nautical miles to go around the Archipelago.
The first connection from the North Sea to the Baltic Sea was when the Eider Canal was built in 1784 during Jorgen's lifetime. This used the Eider River and the canal itself was only 27 miles long. It was limited to fairly small vessels. The present canal called the Kiel Canal was constructed one hundred years later from June 1887- June 1895. The canal was enlarged between 1907 and 1914 and was made large enough for battleships to go through the locks. Most large cruise ships cannot go through the canal but a few have been built so that masts, etc. can be lowered and they can go through the canal. An average of 250 nautical miles are saved by going through the canal.
Jorgen died February 18, 1804 in Vellinge, Odense, Denmark

Jørgen blev gift med Else Marie Jensdatter den 18 okt. 1779 i Bederslev, Skam, Ødense, Denmark. Else blev født cirka 1757 i Bederslev, Bederslev, Odense, Denmark; døde den 20 sep. 1839 i Tørresø, Krogsbølle, Odense, Denmark; blev begravet den 29 sep. 1839 i Krogsbølle, Odense, Denmark. Elsie Marie Jensen was born in 1757 in Hasmark, Odense, Denmark. Her parents were Jens Carstensen and Maren Hansen who were also of the county of Odense on the island of Fyn in Denmark.
She and Jorgen had nine children, four girls and five boys. They had a daughter named Bodel or Bodild who was born in 1790 and died as an infant. Their next daughter was also named Bodel or Bodild. Those daughters were the 6th and 7th children. their two youngest were a baby boy named Hans who was born in 1794 and lived only 3 days. They also named their youngest son born one a one half years later Hans. He lived to have two wives and fifteen children.
Denmark established settlements in Iceland and Greenland and for some time ruled over those lands. Denmark is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary system of government. Ninety Eight municipalities have local governments which are under the direction of regional governments which in Elsie's time were known as counties.
Elsie's husband died when she was in her fifties when Hans was only eight and one half years old. She married two more times probably partly so that her children could have a father image.
Elsie Marie Jensen Christensen died September 20, 1839 in her eighty second year.

Christen Andersen was born April 25, 1796 in Oddense, Viborg, Denmark. His parent were Anders Jensen Norby and Anne Simonsen.
Christen was a carpenter by trade. He and his family must have lived in one of the small cottages which are found in abundance in Denmark. He also raised geese and sheep on his small farm. Some records indicate that the farm was called Lille Ramsing.
He married Anne Pedersen on April 2, 1822 in Oddense, Viborg, Denmark. They had five daughters and one son. One daughter died when she was one year old. The others lived to maturity.
At the time our Christen was growing up and having a family, a quiet revolution was taking place which eventually led to the decline of power of the Royal family which became mostly symbolic. The Danish people have now lived for over 100 years with a constitutional monarchy.
The long years of Viking history give the Danes reason to be proud. People have lived in this land for many thousands of years. For quite a while Denmark was joined with Norway and before that had an alliance with Sweden but at the time Christen was living Denmark was independent and on its own. The country has a history of neutrality and independence.
The gospel was not preached in Denmark until after Christen had died so he never knew the truths it teaches. We feel that he would have accepted them because he was good and gentle man and was known as an indulgent father.
He died May 15,1841 a the young age of forty five, leaving his wife a widow whose youngest child, their son Esper, was then almost 13 years old.

Christen + Anna Pedersdatter. 1876 i Utah, USA. [Gruppeskema] [Familietavle]

Anne Pedersen was born April 29, 1792 in Oddense, Viborg, Denmark and was christened October 1, 1792. Her parents were Peder Pedersen (Rytter) and Maren Jepsen Her last name is variously known as Pedersen, Petersen and Pedersdatter. and her married name was Anne Marie Andersen. This adds extra challenges to the searching out of our family line. I want to follow the information recorded by her granddaughter, Rebecca, and Rebecca's daughters.
Anne and Christen had four daughters and one son besides the girl Maren, who died as an infant. The son, Esper, did not join the LDS Church probably because he was old enough to be on his own by the time Anne heard the gospel preached in 1851. She and her daughters became Mormons and she and three of them sailed to America on the ship Forest Monarch with the first group of Scandinavian Saints in the James E. Fosgren company. The daughters who came with her were Dorthea who married Hans Jorgensen, Dorthe Marie who died in 1854, and Johanne who married Frederic Jensen Holtz while crossing the plains and had four daughters and one son. Anne’s oldest daughter, Mariane, had married in Denmark and came to Utah with her husband, Christen Andersen Thorum after her mother had come. Mariane had one daughter who died at three years old and a son who later had nine children. Johanne was invalid after her children were born and Rebecca Frost mentions visiting her in 1880 with Johanne’s daughter, Carrie Stolsen (Caroline Jensen Holtz Staalesen) who later married Andreas Olsen.
