Encyclopedia of Mormonism; See this page in the original 1992 publication.
    Author: Kimball, Edward L.
Heber Chase Kimball was First Counselor in the First Presidency of the Church from December 5, 1847, until his death in 1868. One of the foremost men in the early years of the Church, along with the Prophet Joseph Smith and Brigham Young, Heber marched in Zion's Camp in 1834, was ordained one of the original members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in 1835, and experienced the spiritual manifestations that attended the dedication of the Kirtland Temple in 1836. He served two missions to Great Britain, in 1837-1838 and 1839-1841 (see Missions of the Twelve to the British Isles). Blunt, honest, loyal, and believing, Heber served the struggling Church well when steadfastness was among the most needed qualities. This is reflected in Joseph Smith's saying, "Of the Twelve Apostles chosen in Kirtland,…there have been but two [who have not] lifted their heel against me-namely Brigham Young and Heber C. Kimball" (HC 5:412).

Heber C. Kimball was born June 14, 1801, near Sheldon, Vermont, to Solomon F. and Anna Spaulding Kimball. In 1811 the family moved to western New York, where, after scanty schooling, young Heber became a potter. He grew to be a physically impressive man, six feet tall and weighing more than two hundred pounds, barrel-chested, and dark-eyed. He married Vilate Murray in 1822. He, his friend Brigham Young, and their wives joined the Church in 1832, after a two-year period of inquiry, and in 1833 they moved to Church headquarters in Kirtland, Ohio.

In 1837 Elder Kimball received an assignment from the Prophet Joseph Smith to lead a group of missionaries to England. As the ship arrived in Liverpool, Kimball leapt ashore, thus becoming the first Latter-day Saint in Europe. His simplicity and spirit suited the men and women who heard him preach, and within a week nine persons sought baptism. On the morning of the baptism, Elder Kimball and his companions reported they experienced an attack by evil spirits, whom they saw distinctly in their room. Calling on God, they received deliverance from the dark power. Through their efforts groups of hundreds of English converts, commencing in 1840, began sailing to the United States to be with the main body of the Church.

After a year Elder Kimball returned to the United States and to Missouri, where the Saints experienced persecution. While Joseph Smith sat imprisoned in the Liberty Jail (Missouri), Heber and Brigham Young organized the removal of approximately 12,000 LDS refugees to Illinois.

When the Prophet Joseph Smith rejoined the Saints in Illinois and established Nauvoo on the Mississippi River, Elder Kimball prepared to return to England. On the appointed day he and Brigham Young took their leave from sick wives, each with a new baby, and were themselves so ill they had to be lifted into the wagon. Elder Kimball was gone from home for almost two years, until 1841.

Kimball participated in the building of the Nauvoo Temple and received the temple ordinances. Joseph Smith taught him privately that God required him to enter into plural marriage. After initial resistance, Elder Kimball married Sarah Noon. His anguish at keeping this secret from Vilate ended when she told him that the Lord had shown her that plural marriage was right, and that she accepted his participation in it. Kimball married a total of forty-three women (in many cases a caretaking rather than an intimate relationship), and by seventeen of them he had sixty-five children. He perceived his plural marriages as a religious obligation; Vilate accepted the other wives as sisters. Heber C. Kimball's grandson Spencer W. Kimball was President of the Church from 1973 to 1985.

After Joseph Smith's assassination in 1844, Church leadership was carried forth by the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles under its president, Brigham Young. Elder Kimball stood next in leadership. The Saints soon had to abandon their homes in Nauvoo and flee to the Great Basin.

The brutal trek across Iowa, temporary settlement in Winter Quarters, and the pioneer journey of 1847 to the Great Salt Lake Valley occurred under Brigham Young's supervision, with Kimball as his assistant. In December 1847, at Kanesville (Council Bluffs, Iowa), the First Presidency was organized, with Brigham Young as president and Heber C. Kimball and Willard Richards as his counselors. In summer 1848 President Kimball led one of three large companies of Saints to the Salt Lake Valley, where he established his families and supported them by farming, ranching, milling, freighting, and Church and civic administration.

The organization of Utah Territory in 1850 brought hostile federal appointees, but since the population was predominantly LDS, Church leaders had de facto control of the legislature. Heber served as leader of the legislature. Friction between the federally appointed judges and the Latter-day Saints led to U.S. President James Buchanan's sending federal troops to suppress a supposed "rebellion" of the Mormons. President Kimball helped direct the resistance.

A notably outspoken preacher, President Kimball often urged self-sufficiency, resistance to the corrupting influences of the larger society, and faithfulness to the kingdom of God. He frequently used metaphors from his experience as a potter. He prophesied accurately many times, including a prediction that Parley P. Pratt would go on a mission to Toronto, Canada, and find a people prepared for his message. He likewise prophesied that from there the gospel would spread to England. He correctly predicted that Pratt's invalid wife would bear him a son, even though the couple had been childless for ten years (Whitney, p. 135). He also prophesied to hungry pioneers in early 1849 that "in less than one year there will be plenty of clothes and everything that we shall want sold at less than St. Louis prices" (Kimball, 1981, p. 190). That summer, people traveling to the California gold fields dumped their excess supplies and equipment on the market in Salt Lake City and the prophecy was true.

President Kimball also shouldered special responsibility for the British mission and for all temple ordinances. His journals constitute important sources of Church history.

Heber C. Kimball died June 22, 1868, from the effects of a carriage accident, ending thirty-six years of unexcelled, dependable service to the Church.

ELIAS GARDNER - Correction and update on this history by Kay Lundell.
From the book “Triumphant Banner, Higgins, Lowry, Tuttle, Gardner, page 311
Quote 1: “Elias continued to live with his father’s family and learned the trade of Shoemaker, most likely from one of his uncles. “At the age of 14 years, Elias was working as an apprentice and by the age of 18 he was established in a shoemaker business. [EG93]
Quote 2: “Elias had studied in the school of dancing and had a great love for music. He was a dancing master and led the brass band for fears in New York says the tradition, THOUGH THE RECORDS INDICATE THAT HE REMAINED IN MASSACHUSETTS. He played the drums with unusual skill and fervor. The town’s people could always distinguish when Elias was playing the drums and were always pleased to hear someone say, ‘Gardner has the drums tonight.” [EG6: 93.”]
The following documents both corrects and substantiates these two traditions. (1) The first comes from “Abstracts of Wills, Administrations and Guardianships in NY State, 1787-1835.” This shows that Elias was 16 when he was apprenticed out. It also corrects the statement that he stayed in Massachusetts. At least for a time he was back in Vernon, New York. IT ALSO DOCUMENTS THAT WILLIAM GARDNER WAS DECEASED BEFORE 1824.

Since Ohel Spelman purchased a tannery in Vernon Center, Oneida, New York and Elias was living under his jurisdiction, it is most likely that he taught him in the art of shoemaking or at least completed his education.
Elias married when 18 years of age, just a couple of years after this document was made.
    (2) In reading the history of Ohel Spelman, it states, …”The home of Lavina Clark Spelman, his mother, was large and a part of it was used for dancing for the youth of the neighborhood. It reads: “…The fiddlers’ dsais, and around the wall a circle of seats left a large space free for dancers.” A place when Elias could have taught dancing and played his drum. At least one of the places.

Elias Gardner was born April 2, 1807 in Vernon, Oneida County, New York, the son of William and Nancy Gardner. Sometime before Elias was two years of age he moved to the birthplace of his mother in Berkshire County, Massachusetts. There the father left his wife to support herself and four sons as best she could and was heard from no more for seven years. Elias grew up in the home of his grandmother and he always thought rather bitterly of his father for deserting his family.

At the end of the seventh year William returned to the city where he and his family had formerly lived seeking information as to their whereabouts. In the meantime Nancy had remarried thinking she would never see her husband again. William made inquiries at a blacksmith shop he had once owned, and was told by the owner that Nancy still lived in the old home but that now she was his wife. After hearing the story the blacksmith told William that he would inform Nancy that her former husband was in the city and if she still wanted to be married to him, he would step aside. But William, feeling that he had no right to the love of the woman whom he had deserted, went to the house to look upon her once more through a window then went away never to be heard from again. He left a present for her with her husband. Nancy always surmised that the gift, a beautiful shawl, came from William and she prized it highly. Shortly afterward she died.

Elias was just a young boy at this time. When he was eighteen years of age he married Harriet Smith. They were the parents of two children. On the 2nd of March, 1830 Harriet died and two years later he married Amy Pritchard. Elias joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, being baptized October 7, 1841. Elias was a leader during the early part of his life in a brass band in New York City. He lived in Nauvoo in 1846 and was endowed in the Nauvoo Temple January 8, 1846. He was a tenant at the Lucius Scovil house next to the present day Scovil Bakery in Nauvoo. This is south of the present Cultural Hall. He was a shoe maker in Nauvoo. He was a pioneer who came to Utah with Heber C. Kimball in 1848. He was active in the church and lived a faithful and full life with many wives and children, who loved and respected him for his many fine qualities. He passed away February 15, 1891 at Annabelle, Utah and was buried in a little place called Glenwood, Sevier, Utah. - Alveretta GardnerThe History of Elias Gardner, His Life and His Family - is too large t o place here. ELIAS GARDNER - Correction and update on this history by Kay Lundell.
From the book “Triumphant Banner, Higgins, Lowry, Tuttle, Gardner, pag e 311
Quote 1: “Elias continued to live with his father’s family and learne d the trade of Shoemaker, most likely from one of his uncles. “At th e age of 14 years, Elias was working as an apprentice and by the age o f 18 he was established in a shoemaker business. [EG93]
Quote 2: “Elias had studied in the school of dancing and had a great l ove for music. He was a dancing master and led the brass band for fea rs in New York says the tradition, THOUGH THE RECORDS INDICATE THAT H E REMAINED IN MASSACHUSETTS. He played the drums with unusual skill an d fervor. The town’s people could always distinguish when Elias was p laying the drums and were always pleased to hear someone say, ‘Gardne r has the drums tonight.” [EG6: 93.”]
The following documents both corrects and substantiates these two trad itions. (1) The first comes from “Abstracts of Wills, Administration s and Guardianships in NY State, 1787-1835.” This shows that Elias wa s 16 when he was apprenticed out. It also corrects the statement tha t he stayed in Massachusetts. At least for a time he was back in Vern on, New York. IT ALSO DOCUMENTS THAT WILLIAM GARDNER WAS DECEASED BEFO RE 1824.

    Notater:

Diantha Hanchett's description of Erie County in 1831 follows: The town of Erie, Erie County, Pennsylvania was a small town of a few hundred people in 1831. People got about on horseback and with ox teams and wagons and shanks mare (i.e., they walked). They had a newspaper coming out once a week. The use of candles was their only means of lighting at night, and all cooking was done in open fireplaces with wood. There were no sidewalks, and few roads were paved. Churches had no heat in them. There were no public schools and only one private school. Most of the houses were of logs and generally only one room with no plumbing.

This town of Erie, Erie, Pennsylvania was where Diantha Hanchett was born 17 Oct 1831. Her parents were of DUTCH descent. Her father was Martin Hanchett (abt 1808-1810); her mother's name was Sarah Mecham. Some of her brothers and sisters were born in Kirtland, Ohio and some in McKean, Pennsylvania. The names of her brothers and sisters follow: Miranda Hanchett married Lorenzo Marble; Nathaniel Hanchett married Sarah Mecham Session; Mary Rosetta Hanchett married Weslie Norton; Elam Hanchett.

Diantha's grandparents were Jonathan Hanchett and Diantha Harmon; Elam Meacham and Mary/Sarah Williams.

At the time of the organization of the Church of Jesus Christ, this family was baptized members of this new church and joined with the saints as they traveled across the plains by ox team, wagons, handcarts, and walked lots of the way.

Diantha was baptized 9 Jan 1846. She was a strong, sturdy gil with a short stocky body 5 ft tall, black eyes and dark hair. She was able to do work, tend babies, do odd jobs for money. Making candles was one job she was good at.

Growing to womanhood and knowing the value of friends and family life, she became the fourth wife of Elias Gardner, married on 1 Nov 1849; endowed 25 Nov 1859; sealed to her husband 11 Jan 1860. she and Elias lived in Payson, UT; also in Annabell, Sevier Co., Utah. Elias and Diantha had seven children: Betsy Ann Gardner; Sarah Diantha Gardner; Susan Locretia Gardner; Joseph Gardner; James Gardner; Marilla Gardner; Nathaniel Gardner.

While in Utah, they were driven from one place to another by Indians. They farmed and in 1851, Diantha taught school in her home in Payson. Her own and neighbor children came to her school. Diantha made a visit to Arizona about 1888 to see her daughters, Marilla, Susan, and Sarah Curtis.

She loved children and was especially kind to those who didn't have a mother. Diantha was very kind. Everyone loved her. After Grandpa Elias Gardner died in Annabell, Utah in 1890, she took another trip to Arizona. Grandma Diantha came on the train by herself, and Uncle Tom Gardner met her at the depot. She came and lived with her daughter, Sarah Diantha and Joseph Curtis. Grandma had a room by herself and was very comfortable.

It was fun to have Grandma at our house. She was jolly and good-natured. We all loved her and we could help take care of her. She loved to drink tea. She would have it every meal. She would say when asking for a second cup, "Better a poor bellie burst than good tea waste."

Her daughter, Susan Lacretia lived near Sarah. Marilla had passed away 13 Nov 1891. Diantha could visit her daughters here. She could go to church with the family who always went with horses and a big wagon. It was difficult for Grandma to get into the wagon, so a chair was placed to climb on into the wagon, then put up in the wagon for Grandma to sit on. Sometimes she would sit up high in the spring seat with the driver.

Grandma need only to call for some child to come and help her or tie her shoe or apron strings. There was always someone to lend a hand. She loved her son Than and we girls would help her write letters to Uncle Than. Alta, our sister, was the one she liked to call on to write letters for her.

She lived here on the ranch for many years. We children loved to hear her talk. She was so emphatic about where she was born and would repeat, "Erie, Erie co., Pennsylvania," and she would say she was "Pennsylvania Dutch"

In her last days she became somewhat inactive. We girls would walk with her to steady her so she would not fall. One morning she did not feel well and lay in bed. Sarah took her some breakfast. She ate very little and stayed in bed. She went to sleep and was asleep several hours. We called Bro. P.A. Lofgreen. He was our best and nearest doctor. Dr. Lofgreen felt that she was in a coma and might not wake up at all.

Mother called in Aunt Susan and Aunt Ellen and they all decided that she was getting weaker and would not come out of this sound sleep. She passed in her sleep very peacefully and without pain. She died 19 Nov 1902 at 71 years of age. Preparation was made for a home funeral service at the Jos. N. Curtis farm. Then her body was laid to rest in the family plot at St. David cemetery. Her grave is by the side of her daughter, Marilla who passed on early in life. Then later Sarah Diantha Curtis was buried on the other side with beautiful head stones at each grave.
