Benjamin Thomas Mitchell’s Distinctive Contributions in the Restoration
Include the Following:
* He was a stone mason for the Nauvoo, IL Temple, dedicated May 1, 1846. As documented in official Church temple construction records, B.T. Mitchell sculpted the first sunstone for the Nauvoo temple. One of the original 30 sunstones is currently on display at the Smithsonian American History Museum in Washington D.C., right next to the original U.S. Star Spangled Banner. The Sunstone at the Smithsonian has a chiseled (M) marked on the upper left hand corner-likely indicating that the Sunstone at the Smithsonian was sculpted by Benjamin T. (M)itchell.
* He was ordained a Seventy at the Nauvoo Conference on October 6th, 1844 and was chosen as a Counselor in the 16th Quorum of the Seventies January 19, 1845.
* On his first Mormon pioneer trek, he was a Captain in the Heber C. Kimball Pioneer company, 1848.
* He carved the Salt Lake City Meridian Marker, currently located in the Church Museum-1st Floor
* He was a stone mason /foreman for the Salt Lake City, UT Temple, dedicated April 6, 1893. Benjamin Mitchell was a close associate with Brigham Young, Truman Angell and others in drawing up the plans for the Salt Lake temple.
* He served a mission in Nova Scotia, Canada, 1852-1855.
* Returning from his mission and on his second Mormon pioneer trek, he led a Mormon Pioneer company, the Benjamin Thomas Mitchell Company, 1854.
* He served as the Bishop of the Salt Lake City, Utah 15th Ward in 1857.
* He sent two of his sons to work as stone masons on the Saint George, UT Temple, dedicated April 6, 1877.
* He helped develop “Deseret” Salt Lake City as a stone mason by constructing commercial and government buildings such as the ZCMI, the Courthouse and a bank building.

Abraham Mitchell was born October 29, 1779. One record says he was born in Muncy, Lycmng County, Pennsylvania and one says Buffalo Valley, Bucks County Pennsylvania. He was the son of William and Mary Browne Mitchell, and was of Irish descent. His people had come to the New World to seek a better way of life. In his youth, Abraham learned the shoe making trade and followed that profession all the rest of his life. He was about 32 years old when he married Annie Colpetzer about 1811. She was born in 1792 in Buffalo, Pennsylvania. Her parents, Johan Adam and Sarah Rhodes Colpetzer were of German extraction. Abraham and Annie became the parents of 12 children named William, Levi, Benjamin T., Esther, Lepley, Ohio, Jesse, Julia Ann, Jeremiah, Samuel, Thomas and James. Not all of them grew to maturity. The Mitchells made their home in Pennsylvania until about 1835 when they moved to the Western Reserve in a wooded part of Ohio. Abraham joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints before 1843. His son Benjamin is said to have joined in June 1836 in Ohio. It could well have been that Abraham and Annie were baptized then also. They were living in a place called New Garden, Columbiana County, Ohio when Annie took sick and died on October 9, 1844. She was only 52 years old. We suppose that Abraham moved with his son Benjamin when he started the trip west to gather with the saints in Missouri. They had traveled as far as Madison, Indiana when they heard that the Mormons had been forced to flee from Missouri because of the cruel and unfair expulsion orders of Governor Boggs and were scattered in different states. The Mitchell’s went on into Iowa and farmed at a place called Marlin County, where they stayed for two years. In the spring of 1841, some Mormon Elders came by and told them that the Mormons were gathering at a place called Nauvoo, Illinois. So, as soon as they could, they disposed of their property in Iowa and journeyed to Nauvoo. Here Abraham became acquainted with the Prophet Joseph Smith and other church leaders. Benjamin's wife died during this period, leaving 3 small children. Benjamin was a stone mason and did much work on the Nauvoo Temple and other buildings. It is presumed that Abraham worked on them also. In June of 1844, the Prophet Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum were killed and Brigham Young took over the leadership of the church. The persecutions were so great that the Mormons were forced to leave Nauvoo in the cold winter of 1846. They made a temporary settlement at Winter Quarters. This was the place that the Mitchells lived until the spring of 1848 when they were ready to cross the plains to the Rocky Mountains. Abraham came to Salt Lake City with Benjamin. Benjamin was captain of 10 wagons in one of the companies. They arrived in Great Salt Lake Valley in the fall of 1848 and went about getting a home started. They were among the first settlers of the 15th Ward. Abraham received his endowments in the Salt Lake Endowment House March 18, 1856. He had been in the valley nearly 15 years when he died at the age of 83 on March 4, 1863.

Hugh Day's ancestral line goes back generations to Robert Day who was born in Ipswitch, Suffrolk, England in 1606 and came to Cambridge, Massachusetts in about 1634 and died in Hartford Connecticut in 1648. He and his wife Mary had a son named Thomas Day who was born in Cambridge in 1634 and died in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1711. Next was John Joseph Day (1676 -1752). Then came three Williams, William Day (1714-1777), William Day (1742-1815), and William Day Jr. (1773-1815). The latter moved to Vermont and from there to Leeds, Ontario, Canada.

Hugh Day was born in about 1810 in a place called Bastard in Leeds, Ontario, Canada. He married Rhoda Day Nichols there in 1830 and there they had five children. Three, Almeda, Lydia, and William were born before their parents joined the Church in 1835. John was born and died the same day in Jefferson County, Illinois in 1837. and (Rhoda) died at an early age after they moved to Illinois. In 1844 in Nauvoo Rhoda died while giving birth to Rhoda Ann who also died.

Hugh married Susannah Judd in Florence Nebraska in 1846 and they had two children while living in Pottawatamie, Iowa. Hugh took his family to Utah in the William Snow and Joseph Young Company of 1850. The group included Hugh and Susannah, their two children, Almeda age 18 and her husband (William McLellan), Lydia Maria age 17, and William Sheldon age 14. The next year Lydia married Benjamin T Mitchell. During the next 20 years they had 11 children, but only 6 lived beyond childhood. Lydia and Benjamin Mitchell's 4th child, Alonzo Abraham, married Marion Ross Young, daughter of Phineas Young and Eleanor James. And that is how the Day, Mitchell, and Young families were linked together. Hugh Day, Phineas Young, and Benjamin Mitchell were prominent men in Salt Lake City.Lydia Maria Day was the sixth wife of Benjamin T Mitchell. She was was born in Leeds, Ontario, Canada. Her parents were Hugh Day and Rhoda Ann Nichols. She had an older sister named Amanda.

Her fathers ancestry in America goes back six generations. Robert Day and his wife Mary were both born in Ipswich, Suffolk England in1604. In 1629 at age 25 they were married in Kilburn, Yorkshire, England. They soon emigrated to the United States and were living in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1634. For a while they also lived in Ipswich Massachusetts at the time of his death in 1648 he was living in Hartford , Conneaut.

William Day Jr was born in Rutland , Vermont in 1773. In 1796 at the age of 23 he married Elizabeth Johns of Leeds, Ontario Canada and they moved to a place called Bastard, Leeds Ontario, Canada. (That Place is now called Rideau Lakes.) A child, Elizabeth, was born in 1897, Loldica and Joel were born in 1801, Loura was born in 1803, Hugh was born in 1909, and Sarah Ann was born in 1811. William Day Jr died in 1815. Elizabeth lived until 1830.

Hugh Day was only 6 years old when his father died. In the year his mother died he was age 21 and that was when he married Rhoda Ann Nichols. Her parents had also moved from Rutland Vermont. Her ancestors were from England and Wails but had been in the United states for six or seven generations.

Hugh and Rhoda had six children Amanda was born in 1831, Lydia was born in 1833, and William born in 1835 were born in Leeds.

That was when the Church came into their lives. Parley P Pratt was serving a mission in Ontario, Canada and several people significant in church history such as John Taylor, Wilford Woodruf, and the Fielding Family came into the church. Hugh was baptized on 29 December 1835. Rhoda was baptized 30 December 1836. After they joined the Church the headed for Nauvoo. John was born in LeRay, Jefferson Illinois in 1837. Hugh's wife, Rhoda Ann, died in Nauvoo in November 1844 after giving birth to a daughter named Rhoda Ann.

Hugh married Susanna Jud in 1846 and the family went to Utah in a wagon train company lead by William Snow and Joseph Young in 1850 and settled in Salt Lake City. Hugh Day is listed as one of the prominent pioneers and settlers of Utah.
